(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – With a deadline looming, advocates are escalating their push for a ballot measure that could mean more money to address homelessness in Chicago.
April Harris, an organizer with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, said the recent sale of the property would have generated $25 million – if there had been a real-estate transfer tax mechanism in place.
She said the Lightfoot Administration has offered to meet with them to discuss easing the homeless problem, but only after a mid-November deadline for getting a measure on the ballot.
The coalition says 20 aldermen support their efforts, but they need more.
Antonio Hernandez said he was homeless for almost three years. He said he is upset with the way the city deals with people in tent cities.
