(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Public housing residents on Monday claimed Black Chicagoans are being pushed out the city through the sale of land that once held Chicago Housing Authority projects.
The Chicago Housing Authority was expected to vote this week on whether to sell land at the former sites of the Harold Ickes Robert Taylor homes. The properties could be used for other purposes.
Rodderick Wilson with the Lugenia Burns Hope Center was among two dozen public housing supporters gathered outside CHA offices in the South Loop. Wilson said the decreasing availability of affordable housing pushes Black Chicagoans out of the city.
“We were promised housing for our community, and they just don’t want to be in the business of housing,” Wilson said. “But that’s what our community needs, and that’s what they were designed for.”
He noted a public input meeting is set for Thursday, days after the CHA board votes on the sale of the Near South Side properties.
