(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Advocates for the homeless battling redevelopment plans around Weiss Memorial Hospital have set up tents on a spot slated for luxury apartment and have named their new community RiseUptown.

Lincoln Property Company now owns the site, which was a hospital parking lot. RiseUptown wants the land to go back to Weiss to expand healthcare services.

RiseUptown representative Marc Kaplan tells WBBM Newsradio the redevelopment is a bad idea because it will mean less medical services for locals. Also, he said, the planned luxury apartments will only displace local residents.

When asked how long the encampment plans to say, Kaplan said, “We're committed to staying until we either win or are removed."

The developer who purchased the parking lot, Lincoln Property Company, has not responded to a request for comment.
