HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Highland Park home has some major damage after a fire this morning, but the family who lives there has been reunited with their pets.
Itzury Barriga said she was startled awake.
“My mother-in-law came to our room, knocking aggressively and telling us there was a fire,” she said.
Barriga then saw the smoke and flames coming out of their one-story home, she said.
“My mother-in-law said that she heard a pop in her room and that she saw smoke outside of her room, as well,” Barriga said.
Firefighters arrived at the one-story ranch at around 6 a.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Nardomarino, where they found all five residents had gotten out safely.
“Right now, it’s still under investigation, but there was quite a bit of fire and smoke,” Nardomarino said.
There were some tearful moments as the family waited in the yard across from their home on Country Lane with their four dogs. Their cats, named Smokey and Loki, were missing initially, but the family found them after firefighters cleared out.
