(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There is yet another open seat on Chicago's City Council.
Ald. Michele Smith of the 43rd Ward emailed North side constituents on Thursday to announce she'll step down from her council seat on Aug. 12.
Her letter cites deepening responsibilities toward family and friends: "My decision to retire prior to the completion of this term is a difficult and deeply personal one."
Smith was first elected to the City Council in 2011, and most recently led passage of new ethics ordinances.
Her replacement will be the third alderman Mayor Lightfoot has had to appoint this year.
Other aldermen recently said they won’t run for re-election, including Harry Osterman (48th Ward) and James Cappleman (46th).
