CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of Chicago aldermen are asking the city's top doctor to require people to show proof of vaccine before going into “public indoor settings,” including restaurants, bars, gyms, movie theaters, and music venues.

Eight members of the Chicago City Council's Committee on Health and Human Relations outlined their concerns in a letter to Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady.

They said vaccines are widely available and that people gathering indoors during the colder fall and winter months could be a breeding ground for the delta variant and other COVID-19 variants; so they are calling on CDPH to require people to show proof of vaccination before entering public indoor settings.

Dr. Arwady and Mayor Lori Lightfoot have encouraged businesses to require proof of vaccination, and a number are answering the call. The Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks are requiring proof of vaccination before entering the United Center. But the city has yet to make it mandatory anywhere.

Meanwhile, New York City is requiring people show proof of vaccination before entering public indoor spaces, like restaurants and theaters.
