CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The latest candidate to jump into the race for Chicago mayor is a familiar name.
6th Ward Alderman Roderick Sawyer, the son of former Mayor Eugene Sawyer, is the fifth challenger to Lori Lightfoot.
Sawyer said he will step down as alderman to run and, if elected next February, he pledges to collaborate with the City Council instead of Lightfoot’s approach, which he categorizes to the Sun-Times as “authoritative and mean spirited.” He said the mayor has emasculated Police Superintendent David Brown and the rank and file want to be led by someone they trust.
The South Side alderman pointed to the press conference Lightfoot held two years ago to blast officers, who hung out at Congressman Bobby Rush’s office while people looted nearby stores, as one reason for low police morale.
