(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A downtown alderman is calling for new restrictions on protesters and noise around a neighborhood family planning clinic.

Ald. Bill Conway, 34th, said he wants to see a “quiet zone” established around the Family Planning Associates Clinic at 615 West Washington.

He said there have been anti-abortion demonstrators there every weekend, but their activities have escalated and become more aggressive. Conway said the noise also bothers local residents.

It’s not without precedent. Conway said hospitals like Northwestern have such zones.

He disagrees with suggestions that this would infringe on free speech.

The city has a so-called Bubble Ordinance that prevents protesters from getting too close, but Conway said it’s hard to enforce.
