CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A no-frills, low-cost grocery chain plans to expand its footprint in the Chicago area.

Aldi is based in Germany, but it's US headquarters is in west suburban Batavia.

It plans to open 150 stores around the country this year, including three in the Chicago area and two in Northwest Indiana.

Crain's Chicago Business writer Ally Marotty told WBBM Newsradio that Aldi has been on a big growth push in the U.S.

"For the past couple years, they have been opening 100, 150 stores a year, and now they are also adding a lot of curbside pick-up options at their already existing stores, as well," Marotty said.

Marotty added that Aldi made a name for itself with shoppers who are looking for lower prices.

"But they found a niche. People know them for their discounts and that is something that they continue to offer. Getting into the online grocery shopping is obviously really important, too, for almost every grocery store these days investing into that," Marotty said.

Aldi is known for its no frills approach to grocery shopping. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags and a shopping cart requires a 25 cent deposit.
