CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- You will have more chances to ride the rails out of Chicago's Union Station.
Amtrak cut back on service when ridership plummeted at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But now, with vaccination rates climbing and cases falling, the passenger railroad is restoring most of its pre-pandemic schedule out of Union Station to destinations in the Midwest and across the country.
The changes will start Monday, when the Hiawatha service to Milwaukee resumes it's pre-pandemic schedule of six roundtrips per day, with a late night departure to Milwaukee on Fridays.
Long distance trains to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, and Washington will return to daily service at the end of the month.
Service to St. Louis, Carbondale, and Quincy should be fully restored by July 19. There is no word yet on a date for a full restoration of service to Detroit.
Face coverings will be required on all trains, in line with the most recent CDC guidance.
