CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Researchers are looking for ways to predict a dangerous condition on Lake Michigan that can heighten the risk of drowning for swimmers.

‘Meteotsunamis’ are caused by storms or sudden changes in air pressure over Lake Michigan.

Eric Anderson, a scientist at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, on Tuesday said the waves can create dangerous conditions along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The waves also can create rip currents that can pull swimmers away from shore.

Anderson and other researchers are trying to find ways to predict when these waves might happen so that people can be warned. He said the science isn't quite there yet.
