(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A long-time local weather expert says Chicagoans are experiencing one of the cloudiest springs on record.

Meteorologist Frank Wachowski retired from the National Weather Service in 1994, but he's been helping the agency since then by keeping track of how much sunshine the city of Chicago gets.

Last month, the percentage of daytime hours with sunshine reached its second-lowest level for April since records were first kept in 1893.

“This April of 2022 we came in second place, with 34%. The record for April is 32%, which was set back in 2011,” he said.

By comparison, Wachowski said, Chicago on average gets about 51% of the possible sunshine in April.

The sunniest April on record in Chicago was in 1942, at 76%.
