How to make giant wood block prints? With a steamroller, of course

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An unusual event on Saturday in Lincoln Square creates art — with the help of steamrollers.

The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative will use the heavy equipment to create large fabric art prints. The rollers will press 7- to 8-foot-long wood blocks that took artists months to carve.

The collaborative's director, Deborah Maris Lader, said while the steamrollers are impressive, the prints they create are even more so.

“When we pull the fabric off the blocks, there are like audible gasps,” she Lader said.

The process is a fun way to introduce people to the art of block printing, she said.

"The Monster Truck Mash Steamroller Printing Festival" runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Chicago Printing Collaborative's studio at 4912 N. Western Avenue.
