CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There were several carjackings in the city over the weekend. A couple of them were carried out in a way that should give you even more pause when you’re in your own car.
On Saturday night in the 200 block of North LaSalle and on Sunday morning on Lake Shore Drive near the 200 block of East Balbo Drive, two cars were bumped from behind, and when the drivers got out to check on damage and exchange information, at least one person in the other car pulled out a gun and demanded they turn over their vehicles. In both incidents, the drivers turned over their keys and the offenders fled.
No one was in custody in either case and detectives were investigating, police said.
Meanwhile, in the Mt. Greenwood and Beverly neighborhoods, two carjackings happened within an hour of each other.
The first happened around 3:40 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a restaurant in the 3100 block of West 103rd Street. Three carjackers pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his vehicle.
According to police, two witnesses inside the restaurant tried to help the victim, but were robbed by the gunmen as they exited the restaurant. One of the gunman fired shots but did not strike anyone. The trio fled in the victim’s Blue Kia.
The second carjacking happened around 5 a.m. The stolen Kia from the earlier incident was used in a carjacking of a rideshare driver on 102nd and Oakley and involved people who had stolen the car on 103rd Street.
The suspects were described as three males between 16 and 18 years old wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information was asked to call Area Two detectives at 312-747-8273.
