CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) —Police in Berwyn said a man was in custody Friday after he fatally stabbed a Good Samaritan inside a grocery store during a disturbance.

Berwyn Police said a teenage girl had gone to the store in the morning to visit her mother, who is a cashier. When she asked her mother the price of a bottle of water, a male customer accused the girl of cutting in line, police said.

Police said the man punched the girl several times in the face and then hit the girl’s mother, the cashier.

When a good Samaritan tried to step between the customer and the two women, the customer stabbed the person multiple times in the chest and torso.

Police say the knife-wielding customer ran and stabbed a second person who’d been trying to stop him.

The Good Samaritan died, and the other man was expected to be released from the hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the deceased as 32-year-old Humberto Guzman.

The male customer was arrested. Police say he had fled to a yard and was sitting in a chair when officers arrived.
