(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Aurora man is accused of striking police officers with a flagpole during the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol.
James Robert Elliott, also known as Jim Bob Elliott, faces a slew of federal charges that include civil disorder and impeding officers with a dangerous weapon, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release Tuesday.
Elliott, 24, was arrested in Batavia on Monday and was expected to make an appearance at Chicago’s federal courthouse today. He was indicted in the District of Columbia on a total of six charges, including five felonies.
“According to the indictment, Elliott used a flagpole to assault officers while illegally on the Capitol grounds,” the news release said.
Since the Capitol riots, more than 700 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach, authorities said. Several defendants are from Illinois.
