A Cook County judge has denied bond for a 20-year-old man charged in a gang shooting back in October. Thomas Dean is the first person charged in the Austin shooting that left one person dead.
Prosecutors say Dean’s DNA was found on two glock handguns found in a black Dodge Charger that was involved in an accident after dropping him off at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. The driver then left the car. The guns had been illegally changed in to fully automatic weapons, prosecutors say. The gun charges against him are the first since Chicago police tried to file murder and aggravated battery charges against five people but state’s attorney kim foxx said there wasn’t enough evidence
He is due back in court on Friday.
Judge Mary Marubio said you can’t get much more dangerous than a shooting in the middle of a weekday where 70 shots are fired on a public street, in her decision to deny bond for Thomas Dean.
Dean’s defense attorney says other people could also be tied to the guns and several appeared to be involved in the shooting that left one man dead.
State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced the charges Thursday after initially declining to bring some citing lack of evidence.
