(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The owner of a popular bakery in Grand Crossing is feeling thankful – despite a car crashing into her business this weekend.

Stephanie Hart anticipated bad news when she got a call early Sunday about the incident. When she arrived at Brown Sugar Bakery, the damage was worse than expected.

“My bakery is open — like, it was OPEN,” she told WBBM Newsradio on Monday.

She’s grateful no one was hurt when a hit-and-run drier slammed into the side of the bakery at 75th and Calumet sometime before 6 a.m. She was able to open, thanks to a quick police response and volunteers, Hart told the Chicago Sun-Times. The bakery is normally closed Mondays.

Hart says the pandemic has changed her perspective.

“If this had happened to me in 2019, I’d be laid out. It would have been the most awful thing in the world … but that’s not anymore.”

Hart will need to replace her new walk-in freezer, but she has insurance and the offer of a space to store her famous caramel cakes until then.
