
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 12-year-old boy is said to be in critical condition after being shot in the chest Thursday night on the South Side.
According to Chicago police, the boy was shot in the chest around 7 p.m. Thursday inside a high-rise apartment in the 3500 block of South Rhodes in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.
Police said a friend of the boy was handling the gun, when the weapon accidentally fired hitting the boy.
The 12-year-old boy was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital where he immediately went into surgery. He was listed in critical condition, according to police and Chicago Fire Department officials.
The child who had accidentally fired the gun ran away, but the gun was recovered at the scene.
The child was eventually talked to by police and released.
No charges are expected at this point. Detectives continue to investigate.
