(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 7-year-old boy was shot in the back seat of his mother’s vehicle Wednesday night in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood, according to Chicago police.
About 8:20 p.m., his 29-year-old mother was sitting with him in a vehicle parked in the 1000 block of North Honore when “an unidentified female offender” walked up to the driver-side door and got into an argument with her, police said.
The person outside then pulled out a gun, opened fire on the vehicle and ran away, police said.
The boy was hit once in the abdomen. He was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said. His mother was not physically hurt.
No one was in custody for the attack late Wednesday.
After the shooting, investigators focused on a stretch of West Haddon Avenue where at least three shell casings lay just across the street from LaSalle II Magnet School. A block away, bustling Division Street patios were packed with diners.
Bill Geoghegan, a longtime resident of the neighborhood, stood near the corner of Honore and Thomas Street and watched as officers worked the scene.
He said he’d been getting ready to head out for an evening walk when he heard three shots ring out, followed by three more. Initially, he thought they were just fireworks.
“I didn’t think anything of it,” Geoghegan said.
Another resident said he was leaving for a run when he heard the popping noises, but also mistook them for fireworks.
Wednesday’s shooting follows weekend gunfire that killed 7-year-old Serenity Broughton and left her 6-year-old sister fighting for life.
More than 230 minors have been shot across the city so far this year, including at least 30 who were younger than 13.
