(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The family of an 8-year-old boy is cooperating with Evanston police after the child brought a handgun magazine to Lincolnwood Elementary School this morning, authorities say.
Police say the boy told his teacher he had a loaded magazine in his school bag. The item was recovered, and the school was placed on lockdown so that officials could search for firearms; none were found.
Police say the gun magazine belongs to one of the boy’s family members.
“There were no threats to the school and the investigation did not reveal any intent by the juvenile to cause harm,” officials said in a news release.
The 8-year-old was released to his family. An investigation continues.
