CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Murder charges have been filed against a 16-year-old boy in a fatal attempted carjacking last month in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
The unidentified 16-year-old boy is accused of firing the shot that killed 33-year-old Shuai Guan in the 3000 block of South Union Avenue on Dec. 21.
The boy was charged with one count each of first-degree murder, murder while committing a forcible felony, and aggravated vehicular hijacking.
Surveillance video captured the crime. Guan got out of his Jeep to check the mailbox outside of his Bridgeport home, when two cars, later determined stolen, pulled up and gunmen demanded his keys.
Guan gave up his keys and called police to report he was being robbed. He was shot to death as he walked away.
The alleged shooter was already in custody at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center when he was accused of the murder, possibly on charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle in connection with the same incident.
Another 16-year-old boy was charged a few days after the crime with receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle and aggravated vehicular hijacking, but he was not charged with murder.
Guan's wife told CBS 2 the teens did not take Guan's Jeep. She said they didn't know how to drive it.
Carjackings have been on the rise throughout Chicago in the last several months.
