Cooper’s family on Monday released an update that the boy has been transferred to the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab after spending nearly one month in intensive care at Comer Children’s Hospital.

The lab’s medical team is expected to determine the types of rehabilitation services Cooper will need to regain his strength and reach his “maximum potential moving forward,” a news release said.

Cooper was also able to visit with the family dog, George. Another positive: The child is eating solid food, including one of his favorite dishes, macaroni and cheese.

Seven people were killed and several were injured when a gunman opened fire on crowds attending the July 4 parade in Highland Park. Cooper’s mother, Keely, has said it’s more important to focus on the good things people have done in the wake of the attack to support each other.

A Go Fund Me page has raised more than $1.7 million for Cooper’s future.
