CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The prognosis for 22-month-old Kayden Swann is very good, nearly two weeks after the child was shot in the head during a road-rage incident on Lake Shore Drive.
“He’s made a near-full recovery,” Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, head of the pediatric ICU, said Monday.
Kayden is off a ventilator and is breathing on his own now, the physician told reporters. The child also has left the ICU.
“He is moving all his extremities spontaneously. He’s alert, he’s active,” Malakooti said.
Although all of that is good news, the doctor notes the child will have a “road of rehabilitation ahead.” That will include strength training.
Malakooti said it will take doctors awhile to determine whether Kayden will be able to make a full recovery. Still, the boy has exceeded expectations, he said.
Police have not reported any arrests of suspects believed to have fired the bullet that injured Kayden.
