(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This week’s “Made in Chicago” takes a look at Stick Grip, a local company that’s giving athletes more control of their bat or hockey stick.
“The most popular sports that people are buying Stick Grip for [are] baseball, softball, lacrosse, hockey, pickleball, tennis,” said Sam Averbuch, the division president of Nakoma Products.
Averbuch said Stick Grip came about after he and his father-in-law got involved with a couple of business people who had a product that’s used to better grip tools.
“Time over time … people started to see a need of this in the sporting equipment industry,” he said.
Averbuch said they decided on the name Stick Grip after showing off the product to young athletes — especially baseball and hockey players — and checking with a couple of marketing people.
“Ultimately, everybody was saying little things like, ‘Can you grip my bat?’ or, ‘This is a great bat grip,’ or in hockey everyone was like, ‘Check out this stick grip.’”
Averbuch said Stick Grip takes the sting out of a mishit baseball and is grippy enough that baseball players don’t really need batting gloves. Stick Grip is shipped out of southwest suburban Bridgeview and can only be bought at StickGrip.com.
