(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Visitors to Brookfield Zoo can meet some animals from another era, beginning Friday.

A temporary exhibit, “Ice Age Giants,” features more than 30 life-sized recreations of the giants that roamed North America and Eurasia thousands of years ago before going extinct.

The animatronic figures move and feature sound effects portraying what they may have sounded like. Graphics will tell visitors about each of the creatures and how they compare to their modern relatives.

The lineup includes some Ice Age denizens that may be familiar to people, such as a 15-foot-tall woolly mammoth and a 5-foot-long saber-toothed cat. But others may not be so familiar, like the South American macrauchenia, which could be related to today’s horses and rhinos.

The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 30, is included with regular admission to Brookfield Zoo.
