CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — City leaders have announced Chicago's Halloween safety plan, which will run through Monday.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Chicago’s public schools, parks, libraries, as well as police, will be hosting events all across the city where kids can celebrate safely.

She said the Chicago Police Department will also increase patrols in all neighborhoods and on the Chicago Transit Authority.

“Our whole of city approach to public safety — that we utilized throughout the summer months — will continue to be in place, especially this weekend,” Lightfoot said.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said officers will be more visible over the weekend and on Monday.

“Our bureau of patrol has dedicated resources not only to our neighborhoods, but also to the CTA system with expanded coverage,” he said.

Brown said police can’t do it along, and he urged residents to take steps to help make their neighborhoods safer for Halloween, including asking drivers to slow down and watch out for trick-or-treaters.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications is encouraging parents to create a profile on Smart911.com. The free service allows people to store household information about children and other people or pets in the home as well as health conditions in case of an emergency. 911 operators can then access the information if needed.

OEMC advises that trick-or-treaters carry flashlights and that parents make sure they know who their kids are with and that costumes are safe.

Additionally, OEMC said parents should to take digital pictures of their children including in their costumes and upload those to their Smart911.com profiles in case they get lost.
