(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The shooting death of Chicago Police Officer Ella French earlier this month led women who own several suburban businesses to hold prayer vigils tonight.

Sylvia Masters, owner of the Mapleberry Pancake House in Carol Stream, said French’s Aug. 7 killing moved her in a very personal way.

She has a daughter about the same age, she said.

“It did hit home. Something like this can happen at any time, any place. And it’s just heartbreaking. And the way it happened is just horrific,” Masters said.

In addition to French, the vigils were also organized to honor all first responders and military members.

Three other women-owned businesses in Bartlett, Bloomingdale and Roselle also decided to host vigils at the same time.

French was killed in Englewood as she and two other officers were conducting a traffic stop. Three men have been charged in connection with the case.
