CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office warns that callers are posing as police and trying to intimidate residents into buying gift cards.
Four residents alone called Friday morning to say they’d received calls using an actual deputy’s name.
The caller reportedly told the residents there was a warrant out for their arrest. If they bought a gift card and provided the scratch-off number on the back they could avoid going to jail, they were told.
That deputy’s name is publicly available, the sheriff’s office said, so it’s not surprising it was used. Authorities stress that bond money is never taken by phone, let alone through gift cards.
The Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who has received such calls to report it to police and don’t feel embarrassed about it.
