CDPH, CTA launches ‘Protect Chicago’ vaccination bus

COVID-19 vaccines for seniors

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Department of Public Health, in partnership with the Chicago Transit Authority, launched a new COVID-19 vaccine mobile distribution pilot program using a CTA bus to reach seniors in areas with low vaccination rates.

The “Protect Chicago” vaccination bus made its first stop Wednesday at Atlas Senior Center, located at 1767 E. 79th St., and successfully vaccinated 98 clients, according to CDPH.

According to the city, the program was designed to prioritize seniors who live in zip codes with low vaccination rates.

Family members, neighbors, or friends of a senior from any of the eligible zip codes, who aided in a senior’s vaccine registration, are also eligible for vaccine. The vaccine is offered at no cost to everyone regardless of insurance and immigration status.

Future events and locations are currently being planned.

The city is working with community-based organizations, aldermen, and other community stakeholders to identify the best locations and promote the program among community members. Appointments are strongly encouraged, but not required.

Once future events are determined, eligible individuals will be provided with special registration link and code. More information about Chicago’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout at chicago.gov/COVIDvax.
