CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The public has been asked to help the families of fallen Chicago firefighters Jermaine Pelt and Jan Tchoryk.
“This is really hard. It’s hard for all of us,” said Chicago Fire Captain Anthony Martin, who spoke at the Firehouse for Truck 45 on the 3100 block of West 111th Street. “In my career on the department, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
As the funds come in, the shock and mourning continue.
“It’s gut-wrenching when we lose one of our own,” Martin said. “Most of these guys [behind me] were there that night. We responded to that incident. It’s a gut-wrenching incident, as is the loss of every firefighter and paramedic on the department.”
Martin said the Chicago Fire Department’s Retirees’, Widows’ and Children’s Fund will benefit the family of Jermaine Pelt, who had one adult daughter and a very young son, and the family of Jan Tchoryk, who had three children.
“We have a lot of people that volunteer a lot of themselves in order for us to be able to put something together where we can guarantee that all the money that comes into our organization is going to go to support Jermaine’s son and similarly situated children,”
Because one firefighter's family is every firefighter's family.
