CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A number of area health departments said it’s “go time” for getting children ages 12 to 15 vaccinated against COVID-19. The CDC gave its approval for that age group Wednesday.
A number of communities in the Chicago area plan to start giving COVID shots to 12- to 15-year olds Thursday, including vaccination sites in the City of Chicago, Cook County, Will County, Lake County, and Kane County.
A DuPage County health official told WBBM Newsradio earlier this week that 12- to 15-year olds would be able to start getting vaccinations there Monday, at the latest, and Saturday at the earliest.
Chicago Vaccine Hunter, Benjamin Kagan, 15, was lucky enough to get his COVID shot Wednesday night at the Cook County vaccination site in Forest Park.
"It feels absolutely amazing. I’ve been waiting for this day for a very, very long time. Didn’t hurt that much," he told CBS 2.
Kagan personally helped more than 800 elderly people find vaccination appointments as part of the Vaccine Angels Facebook group.
Health officials encourage families to get vaccinated at the same time, so all members of the family are protected.
A parent or guardian must accompany youth under 18.
Besides county vaccination sites, many pediatricians are also offering COVID shots.
Meanwhile, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said test trials of the Pfizer vaccine are looking promising for 2- to 11-year olds, as well, with possible use-approval in the fall.
