CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The heat wave continues today, with heat indices possibly eclipsing 100 degrees.

The Chicago area is in the midst of sweltering conditions. For the next three days, we will experience oppressive heat and humidity.

Today, AccuWeather forecasts a high of 94, however the threat of scattered thunderstorms later this morning and in the afternoon, especially north of the city, could keep temperatures somewhat lower.

Tomorrow could be the hottest day of the week, according to the National Weather Service, with again, temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s as well as insufferable humidity. Friday should be the last day of the extreme heat, as an anticipated evening storm front should cool temperatures and reduce humidity.

The NWS is stressing the importance of staying hydrated and cool during this heat wave and reminds the public on how you can avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you experience dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea or weakness, they suggest moving to a cooler area, loosen your clothing and drink water. The NWS notes that heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Signs of heat stroke include confusion, dizziness and unconsciousness.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) has activated six community centers as cooling centers. They will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The once exception however will be the Garfield Center on the West Side. It will be open 24 hours a day.

Suburban Cook, DuPage, Kane and Will Counties also will have cooling centers open.
