(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Aldermen say they are moving forward with an ordinance to protect abortions and other kinds of medical care in Chicago while protecting people who come here from restrictive states.

The Bodily Autonomy Sanctuary Ordinance would make Chicago a haven for women seeking abortions or for trans people who seek “gender-affirming” health care.

Sponsoring Ald. Rossana Rodriguez (33rd) said in the wake of Roe v Wade’s reversal, the measure is especially important for people coming to Chicago from states that bans abortion.

Law enforcement could not aid in prosecutions in other states — in other words, no extraditions and no sharing information about those seeking medical care. The ordinance would also provide abortion and gender care information through the city’s 3-1-1 information system.

A related measure would provide $1 million in funding for reproductive care and “clinic defense.”

The proposed ordinance has the backing of Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Equality Illinois, the Illinois Nurses Association and the ACLU of Illinois, among other groups.
