CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot's 2022 city budget won easy, but far from unanimous Chicago City Council approval Tuesday afternoon. The vote was 35 to 15.
Progressive Pilsen Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez was one of the 15 no-votes on the $16.7 billion city budget.
"Just like last year, this budget relies on property tax increases, regressive taxes and fines," Sigcho-Lopez said.
West Side Ald. Michael Scott voted yes, saying this budget addresses many of the concerns of people in the neighborhoods.
"They say that violence is the problem that we have in the city. And I think that this budget takes a downpayment on trying to solve some of those those issues," Scott said.
But Southwest Side Ald. Marty Quinn voted no, saying the budget fails to deal with the police shortage that he feels the city is facing.
