The Chicago Community Trust — one of the City’s leading foundations — is expanding its mission to address violence, even as it goes through a transition at the top.
Under the leadership of President and CEO Helene Gayle, the Chicago Community Trust has committed itself to helping close the wealth gap among residents.
However, James Reynolds Jr., who chairs the foundation’s executive committee, said they can’t ignore the hopelessness among so many young people committing violent crimes.
“Many do not expect to live past 25,” Reynolds said. “So we’ve got to get in there, and we’ve got to get in there pretty deep, which is why we’re raising so much money.”
Dr. Gayle said part of the answer is investing in communities where they live.
“We’re investing in disinvested communities along with the government,” Gayle said. “We’re helping people who are small business owners to be able to grow their businesses and grow their revenue.”
Dr. Gayle is leaving the foundation to become president at Spelman College in Atlanta.
The Chicago Community Trust will take center stage during WBBM’s “At Issue” program Sunday at 9:30 p.m.
