Chicago Congressman Mike Quigley joined WBBM Newsradio on Wednesday to describe what he experienced as protesters stormed the Capitol.

Lawmakers were hustled out of their respective chambers as pro-Trump demonstrators overtook the building where House and Senate members were considering the 2020 presidential election results — results that President Trump has refused to acknowledge.

“The proceedings were interrupted and they thought it would be temporary and each time it was interrupted the warnings became seemingly more dire,” Quigley, a Democrat, said from a secure and undisclosed location.

The chaos was blamed on supporters of Republican President Trump, who has continued to argue the presidential election that he lost to Democrat Joe Biden was rigged.

Quigley, who coughed during the interview, said at some point tear gas had been deployed outside the House chamber doors.

"It's a very sad day for our country," he said.
