(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Artists, photographers, and musicians will gather in Chicago on Friday night to raise money for a charity that purchases supplies for the Ukranian military.
Kateryna Turchyna, a web designer who lives in Chicago, fled Ukraine when Russia invaded the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
She said on the night of this year’s Russian invasion she spent the evening calling and texting friends and relatives who are still in the country.
One month later, the stress of daily bombings has become overwhelming, Turchyna said.
"People are tired. Not only physically. Because you listen to this horror and you don't understand when it will end," she said Thursday.
She has participated in a number of solidarity marches in Chicago in recent weeks and is grateful that the world is rallying around the Ukrainian cause.
"I cannot stress enough how important it is. It says we are not alone and we will win. It cannot be any other way," Turchyna said.
The fundraiser at the Ukranian National Museum, 2249 W. Superior, begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday April 1. It will feature musicians, artists, and photographers. The entry fee is $10.
Proceeds will be used to buy supplies — ranging from boots to binoculars — for the Ukrainian military.
