(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council has passed an ordinance to increase the fine for blocking a bike lane, from $150 to $250. But some bicyclists question whether it’ll make much difference.
“I mean really, personally, I’ve never seen anybody get a ticket for being in a bike lane,” says Max Hurley, who works at Turin Bicycles in Ravenswood.
He questions whether tere will be more enforcement along with the higher fine for blocking a bike lane.
“I think it’s a good step, but I don’t really know that it’s going to make much of a difference.”
Hurley says Chicago should try what New York City is contemplating: giving a cash reward to anybody who reports a vehicle that’s blocking a bike lane.
“It’s almost a vigilante thing, where you can walk around and report vehicles that are in the bike lanes. And people can actually make some money doing that,” he said.
Chicago’s ordinance increasing the fine for vehicles that block bike lanes takes effect later this month.
