CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Endorsements have continued to come in for candidates looking to deny Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot a second term in office.
On Monday, the Service Employee International Union Healthcare Illinois (SEIU HCIl) announced its endorsement of Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson.
The union represents about 90,000 healthcare workers in the Midwest. It is now the fifth labor organization to back Johnson, who already won endorsements from SEIU Local 73, the Chicago Teachers Union, the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
“It is a tremendous honor to have the endorsement of SEIU Healthcare Illinois, which serves our city’s most vulnerable — children, seniors and individuals living with disabilities,” said Johnson in a statement.
“From their fight for a $15 minimum wage and unionized domestic work, to concrete steps toward child care for all, SEIU HCII supports working families all across Chicago, and I am grateful to be their choice to lead our city toward a better and more equitable future," Johnson said.
Businessman Willie Wilson, who also hopes to unseat Lightfoot, is expected to receive an endorsement this week from the Polish American Congress Illinois Division.
The organization said it supports both Wilson’s commitment to making neighborhoods safe and his proven track record of supporting the Polish community, especially during the pandemic.
“The Polish community is a significant part of Chicago,” Wilson said in a statement. “I look forward to providing the Polish community a voice in city hall. I will have the most inclusive administration in the history of Chicago, and together we will rebuild our city.”
There are at least 11 declared candidates for Chicago mayor.
The deadline to file nominating petitions is 5 p.m. Nov. 28.
