(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Political observers see Chicago’s April 4 mayoral election as a fight for the voters in the middle of the political spectrum.
With former schools chief Paul Vallas running to the right, and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson on the left, Erin Hegarty -- political reporter for The Daily Line -- sees the battle focused on moderate voters.
Political analyst Phil Rogers -- formerly of NBC5 -- says the crime issue gives Vallas an advantage with moderates. He says while some moderates may back social-justice initiatives, they are concerned about crime.
He said these voters may be inclined to gravitate toward Vallas, at least as long as that issue continues as the main focus.
Meantime, the April 4 election could give Chicago a very different City Council.
Once-powerful Ald. Edward Buke chose not to run for re-election.
He is facing a federal corruption indictment.
Jeylu Guttierez won the open seat with 65 percent of the vote. Hegarty notes that only about 4,400 people voted in that election, one of the lowest totals in any ward.
Chicago’s political landscape is the discussion topic of “At Issue,” which runs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 pm. Sunday.
