CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - More people have been returning to their cars to find those unwelcome orange envelopes under their wipers.

Parking tickets were up 25% for the first 6 months of the year over the same time last year, when the city was making up for 2020 losses when the downtown streets were largely deserted.

Nearly 1.1 million tickets were written, compared to 850,000 for the first six months of 2021.

This was brought up by Ald. Jeanette Taylor during a budget hearing.

“We sold the parking meters. They are ticketing, so is the department of finance, are you-all comparing numbers, and have you-all re-looked at that contract to see if we could renege, (be)cause they making a killing,” Taylor said.

To be clear, Chicago City Comptroller Reshma Soni said the city gets all of the parking ticket revenue.

At the same time that more parking tickets were being written, the Sun-Times reported fewer cars were being booted, a 12% decline- from 27,000 to roughly 24,000.
