(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Donations are coming in for the family of a Chicago police officer who died from COVID-related complications days before Christmas.

A Go Fund Me fundraiser set up for Jose Huerta’s wife, daughter and son is full of condolences and prayers. Joey Huerta — as he was known to family — died two days before Christmas of pneumonia from a COVID infection.

Relative Adriana Sandoval tells CBS Chicago his family tried to celebrate Huerta’s favorite holiday by opening gifts because he would have wanted that.

Sandoval didn’t say if Huerta was vaccinated or had underlying health issues. The 50-year-old went into cardiac arrest earlier this month.

He is the fifth Chicago police officer to die of the virus.

The Go Fund Me effort is aimed at helping cover long-term expenses.
