(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police officer was shot Wednesday night when the squad car she was in tried to pull over another vehicle in West Englewood, officials said.
Two police officers in a marked squad car tried to stop the vehicle near 61st and Paulina around 5:45 p.m., Supt. David Brown said. The vehicle sped away, then pulled alongside the squad car and someone inside started shooting, hitting the female officer behind the wheel, Brown said.
The wounded officer's partner drove her to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The officer was in critical condition but stable, Brown said.
Brown said the shooter's car crashed at 64th and Bishop, and the two people inside took off running.
Witnesses told police the pair ran in different directions.
According to the superintendent, officers found a gun and set of car keys near the shooter's car.
"I urge all Chicagoans to remember the selfless sacrifice that police officers make every day for our safety. They risk their lives every day to keep us safe," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a prepared statement issued Wednesday evening.
