CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Today is the first day of the new year for Chicago Public Schools.
Students will not be the only ones feeling the excitement of a new start.
Mayor Brandon Johnson plans to visit four schools on day one. The former CPS teacher and CTU organizer is slated to welcome students at Beidler and Brighton Park Elementary as well as Kenwood Academy and Jackie Robinson Elementary.
We’ll see if the district is continuing its decline in enrollment that saw 322,000 students enrolled last fall, 9,000 fewer than the year before and a drop of 80,000 compared to the prior decade. New arrivals such as the children of migrants may stem that.
Like many districts, CPS has a teacher shortage, with over one thousand vacancies.
