Chicago Public Schools providing free COVID vaccines, school supplies at annual ‘Back-to-School Bash’

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Public Schools will host the first of 10 back-to-school events across the city on Friday. Officials said the events should help parents meet with their schools, get school supplies, and receive free COVID-19 vaccines.

CPS billed the events as a “Back-to-School Bash,” and officials with the school district wrote that the events will feature music, food, games, and activities.

Pedro Martinez, the CEO of CPS, said the events are a chance for students and families to reconnect with their school communities.

“Back-to-School Bashes … ensure [families] have the resources necessary for a healthy and successful school year,” Martinez said. “We know our families are motivated to start off strong, and we look forward to bringing them together to celebrate a new school year.”

The first event, scheduled for Friday from 2 – 5 p.m., will be held at Finkl Academy at 2332 S. Western Ave. Dates and locations for the other nine events are listed below. All events will run from 2 – 5 p.m.

-July 20 at Hanson Park; 5411 W. Fullerton Ave.

-July 22 at Roosevelt High School; 3436 W. Wilson Ave.

-July 25 at Crane Medical High School; 2245 W. Jackson Boulevard

-July 27 at DuSable Campus; 4934 S. Wabash Ave.

-Aug. 1 at Tarkington Elementary School; 3330 W. 71st St.

-Aug. 5 at Field Elementary School; 7019 N. Ashland Ave.

-Aug. 9 at Fenger Academy High School; 11220 S. Wallace St.

-Aug. 10 at Chicago Vocational High School; 2100 E. 87th St.

-Aug. 11 at Michele Clark High School; 5101 W. Harrison St.

The Chicago Teachers Union recently criticized CPS for what union officials said was an inconsistent COVID testing and vaccination program for students attending summer school.

CPS released a statement reaffirming its plans for free weekly testing at schools and work with CTU to increase student testing and vaccinations.

School will begin for the fall on Aug. 22 at CPS.
