CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Public Schools students will have to continue to mask up despite a downstate judge’s ruling to stop the governor’s mandate.
“We will stay the course,” said a statement from CPS. The district said the ruling does not stop it from exercising its authority on masking, vaccination and testing requirements.
Mark Weaver of Bloomington told CBS 2 Chicago the judge's ruling is a victory for many families.
“Even if we don’t have a choice, but our elected school officials have a choice, that those school officials are able to look at their local metric,” Weaver said.
However, legal analyst Irv Miller told the station the decision could bring unwanted moves.
"Well, it could potentially shut schools down if the school administrators think that based upon his ruling, the kids are at risk and the teachers are at risk. And that could easily mean, ‘Hey listen, we’re going back to remote,'” Miller said.
The attorney who brought the suit said any district that requires masks is acting illegally while the state attorney general has filed an emergency stay.
