(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – It was one year ago that Russia attacked Ukraine, and the day has special meaning for one Chicago school.
St. Nicholas Cathedral School, in the 2200 block of West Rice, currently has 75 students who have fled the war in Ukraine.
School Principal S Anna Cirilli said educators have worked hard to help the Ukrainian kids adjust and learn.
“Today we talked a little bit with parents about some of the traumas that still come up. There might be like key events, like when they hear sirens.
Those sorts of things are triggering for them because when they were leaving Ukraine, they were leaving with the sounds of sirens, with the helicopters and warplanes flying over.”
A prayer vigil will be held at St. Nicholas on Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of Russian invasion.
“When they come to our school, they sort of have an opportunity to let that go, through the friends they have made here, through the loving staff that’s here to support them every single day,” Cirilli said.
