(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Public Schools is canceling classes on Friday Nov. 12 so that students can use the time to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The plan was reported by CBS Chicago Thursday evening and confirmed by the Chicago Teachers Union, which has been at odds with school administrators over their handling of the pandemic.

“We welcome the district acknowledging the urgent need for parents and families to vaccinate their children, and providing time and opportunity to do so,” the CTU tweeted.

The teachers union said it would continue to push CPS to use other means to encourage vaccinations, including school-based vaccine clinics and “robust outreach.”

Federal regulators recently have approved COVID-19 vaccines for children younger than 12.
