(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Nearly two dozen dogs are searching for new homes after an animal rescue brought them to Chicago from a suspected puppy mill in Iowa.

The call came last week from a partner rescue to meet in Wisconsin. One Tail at a Time spokesperson Kimberly Thomas says the Chicago shelter was able to take 20 dogs, thanks to their network.

Three are Wheaten terriers, and the rest are golden retrievers. All are females that Thomas says have ear infections and other issues from being kept in crates by a breeder who had his license suspended by the USDA for three weeks.

One Tail at a Time is looking for compassionate and patient adoptive families -- preferably ones that already have a confident dog to help show their new pet the ropes.

Depending on how things go with their foster families, some of the dogs will be up for adoption in a few weeks.
